We will have an incredible speaker during this Thursday’s meeting! The speaker is our very own Rotary District 6950 Assistant Governor, Will Miller. He will be presenting on his special expertise in unidentified aerial phenomena and extraterrestrial intelligence…and he has tailored his talk to fit the interests and requests of our club! This isn’t just a hobby for Will, he is a renowned expert and is consulted on a regular basis on the subject. You do not want to miss this presentation! With the bizarreness of Halloween right around the corner, this is a great chance to extend your knowledge of the unexplained and life beyond earth! Come join in this enlightening discussion!

p.s. If you come to the meeting please bring a bag of Halloween candy for a service project we are working on!

Press Release! Mustache Launch Date Approaches

October 6th, 2011 by admin No comments »

Stay Classy PosterIt’s only three days away! This Saturday The Rotary Club of St. Petersburg Sunset launches the flying Flugtag  mustache! Check out this press release for more details.

ST. PETE ROTARY TO LAUNCH FLYING MUSTACHE IN TAMPA FLUGTAG

ST PETERSBURG, FL OCTOBER 4TH, 2011: Having recently celebrated the anniversary of its charter year in Rotary International, the newest Rotary Club of St. Petersburg Sunset is taking fund raising to new heights – or at least that is the hope.

The fun loving group is set to launch a flying machine hewn in the form of a giant mustache at this Saturday’s Red Bull Flugtag at the Tampa Convention Center. After submitting a video application, the Rotary’s “You Stay Classy Tampa Bay” team was selected to join the ranks of other aviation novices in an attempt to pilot a handmade contraption from a platform 30 feet over the Hillsborough River. Gates open at 11 a.m. local time, with flights (and crashes) between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

In the Rotary tradition of charity, the team is using Flugtag as a fun and zany way to raise awareness and donations for a more serious cause. All proceeds from pre-launch fundraisers will be dedicated to the organization Movember. Movember is a group committed to raising funds for and awareness of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Movember encourages all men to raise awareness of these issues by growing mustaches in the month of November. To raise these funds, the Sunset Club has utilized both traditional and less conventional methods. Securing business sponsorships was a safe bet, while selling faux mustaches and hosting movie screenings featuring characters with fuzzy upper lips has taken fundraising to new levels of charity and fun.

Central to the mustache motif and theme of the Club’s Flugtag entry, “You Stay Classy Tampa Bay,” is a tribute to the band of motley and sometimes-mustachioed newscasters in the hilarious 2004 film Anchorman. The Club encourages you to dust off a polyester suit, practice your rendition of “Afternoon Delight,” and help support a worthy cause.
Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The St. Pete “Sunset” Club is specifically geared for the young and “young at heart.” The Club meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront Hotel, and welcomes all visitors to join for happy hour. For more information, visit www.stpetesunsetrotary.org.

Thank You To Our Flugtag Title Sponsors!

The Mustache FlyerIn August, the Sunset Club was selected to participate in the upcoming Red Bull Flugtag in Tampa. Since then, we have been hard at work building a flying mustache (in honor of the legendary Ron Burgundy, from the hysterical movie, Anchorman) in an effort to raise funds for the Sunset Rotary Foundation and for Movember, a campaign that raises vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. The time is finally upon us to take the mustache farther than it has ever gone before!

As the big event approaches, and we get ready to see just how far the Mustache Flyer goes, we would like to take the chance to extend a big THANK YOU to our two title sponsors for supporting the team and helping us support Movember.

J2 LogoThank you to J2 Construction & Environmental Services. J2 is multi-disciplined design-build firm providing comprehensive construction management and environmental services for both the private and public sectors. They made a sizable donation to the Sunset Rotary Foundation and our goal of raising money for Movember, which was the service spoke of our Flugtag efforts. Many thanks J2!

Heart & Home LogoThank you to club member and title sponsor, Sabine Neihaus of Heart & Home Realty. Sabine is a professional real estate agent with access to MLS listings and homes for sale. She made a sizable donation to the Sunset Rotary Foundation and our goal of raising money for Movember Thank you Heart & Home Realty!

We would not have been able to pull off the fun and exhausting project with out you both. Here’s hoping we make you proud!
