Come Help Us on a Habitat Build in September!

August 24th, 2010

habitatlogoCome join us as our Club volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County!

We will be volunteering from 7:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. on Saturday, September 11th.

  • Closer to the date we will know our site location and can coordinate some carpooling (which is strongly recommended by Habitat).
  • Habitat will provide water on site.
  • We need to wear shoes that will protect our feet (shoes with closed toes and closed heels).
  • Habitat will provide the tools we need, but if you wish to bring your tools from home, they recommend that you mark them with your name. They also highlight that it is especially helpful for us to bring our own work gloves, a pencil, hammer, and tool belt or nail apron if you have it.

This service opportunity is open to everyone – whether you are a Club member or would just like to get to know our Club a bit better!

Please email our Service Projects Chair, Meredith, at serviceprojects@stpetesunsetrotary.org to reserve your spot!

We hope you can join us in assisting Habitat for Humanity build a home!

A Busy Weekend for the Sunset Club!

August 17th, 2010

bakesaleThe Sunset Club has some great stuff planned for the coming weekend and we hope that everyone will be able to join us!

The club is putting on a Bake Sale & Ice Cream Social at St Pete Shuffle to benefit the ventilator project!

We would love for family, friends and anyone interested in getting to know our club to join us on Friday, August 20th at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club play some shuffleboard, have a sweet treat for a great cause, and listen to the music of Rebekah Pulley. The festivities will begin at 7pm and you are welcome to drop by for a few minutes or stay all night. The Shuffle Club is located at 559 Mirror Lake Dr N in downtown St. Pete.

salarmy-logo Our club will also be going to The Salvation Army Cafe to hang out and chat, maybe play some games or listen to music, and just be there for some of St. Pete’s homeless, who may need someone to listen, talk or laugh with them. Please join us for an afternoon at Sally’s Cafe on Sunday, August 22nd from 1230pm – 3pm.

For more information on either of these opportunities to contribute to a good cause, please contact us at info@stpetesunsetrotary.org.

An Afternoon at Sally’s Cafe

July 13th, 2010

salarmy-logoMark your calendars for our upcoming service project at the Salvation Army Cafe. The Cafe is a safe and dry place for those in need in our community to go on Sundays to get out of the elements, relax, and spend an afternoon in the company of others. Our club will be going to The Cafe to hang out and chat, maybe play some games or listen to music, and just be there for some of St. Pete’s homeless, who may need someone to listen, talk or laugh with them. Gail, our wonderful contact at the Salvation Army, told our members, “I have found that the homeless respond best to people like you — people from the community who think they are worth listening to, spending time with, and encouraging.” We look forward to stepping up and making some new friends.

Please join us for an afternoon at Sally’s Cafe.

Date: Sunday, August 22nd
Time: 1230pm – 3pm
Where: 340 14th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

A Green Shirt and Lots of Laughs at S4TL

June 20th, 2010

s4tl-1

It is time for Seminar for Tomorrows Leaders on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL!

S4TL is a week-long leadership training program for high school students. It is organized annually by several Rotary Districts in mid and southwest Florida. This award-winning program is capable of transforming the lives of these young leaders.

Our club is making an effort to participate this week in whatever ways we can. I had the pleasure of going to Lakeland today to assist with registration and check-in. My task of checking in the incoming delegates offered me the opportunity to meet many of tomorrows leaders face to face. I had a great time getting to know the students and other Rotarians and laughing away the afternoon. As I was leaving, I found myself wishing I was one of the lucky “white shirts” who get to stay and watch these teens blossom and grow all week. I highly recommend that our club members try to find a way to get to Florida Southern for a rap session during the week.

A special shout out to my fellow “green shirts” from the Seminole Lakes Club. Hope to see you soon at a St. Petersburg Sunset meeting!

They Call and We Come!

Please note: These are only a few of the project photos. More will be added this weekend, so please check back!

On June 12th our club had the opportunity to answer a call for help.
Rick, of Habitat for Humanity, called our club specifically for some urgent help he needed working on a house in south St. Pete. Through his own blood, sweat and tears, Rick and a small contingent of volunteers have been rebuilding a house literally from the ground up. This house is home to a retired school teacher and his wife that still volunteer their time tutoring in the local school system.

Getting near to the end of the project, Rick needed a boost of energy and volunteers to help get the job done. Our club stepped in and helped clean prime and paint the living room, bathroom, kitchen and kitchen cupboards, doors, and front porch. Thanks to all who volunteered on this project and answered this last minute call for help. It meant a lot to Rick to have our support and even more to the family who can now truly call this their home.

The club spent the day helping the Salvation Army’s “Mama Love” sort and prep a whole bunch of food that was to be served to the residents and local homeless over the next few days. We also helped serve the lunch meal for that afternoon. As always, we had fun spending time together and left at the end of our shift feeling like we had made a positive impact in our community. Alpha House of Pinellas County

The club volunteered to help out at Alpha House of Pinellas County, where they are undergoing a bit of a facelift. Our efforts help keep the mothers and children of Alpha House healthy and happy. We had lots of fun painting a maze of hallways, making a bit of a mess and getting to know some of the newer members of our group.
