Job Skills Workshop on Saturday!

May 18th, 2012

Job Skills WorkshopThe Sunset Club Service Committee has put together a job skills program for the youth at Ready for Life, and will be holding the workshop this weekend at Pinellas County Job Corps Center in St. Petersburg. Several club members and friends of the club have been hard at work over the last few months creating a program that touches on topics such as searching for a job, the application and interview process, and some general rules of conduct for maintaining a good employment record. Those in attendance will participate in three distinct sessions, each led by a pair of representatives from the club, who are eager to share their skills and insights with the job seeking young adults.

In addition to sharing their skills, the workshop team will be providing the youth with some job search essentials including, portfolios in which to keep materials, post-interview thank you cards, and ties for interested gentlemen to wear to interviews.

Here’s to a great workshop that leads to lots of jobs for the Ready for Life youth!

Guest Speaker

May 14th, 2012

This week’s guest speaker will be  Jim Harmon who has been the Executive Director at Rotary’s Camp Florida for almost four years. Here is a quick quote from the camp’s website at http://www.rotaryscampflorida.com

Rotary’s Camp Florida is a not for profit, 501c3, project of the Rotary Clubs throughout the state of Florida.  The camp was founded in 1991 to operate and maintain a year around facility for children with medical, physical and emotional challenges.  The camp welcomes and hosts many special needs groups.  Most of the campers have life limiting conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Tourette syndrome, diabetes, cancer, leukemia, birth defects, etc.

Our mission is for the camp to encourage and foster children to enjoy and appreciate nature; to play, make new friends and create good memories; to learn about, master and share their challenges; to grow in character, self-confidence and determination along with realizing life changing skills and opportunities.”

Our meetings are always open to anyone who would like to attend so please fell free to invite your friends, family, or anyone who might be interested.

Cinco de Mayo Fun Fact

April 30th, 2012

Cinco de Mayo means 5th of May in Spanish. This day is normally confused with Mexican Independence Day (el Dieciseis de Septiembre) which is celebrated on 16th of September (our Charter Anniversary!). Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862. It is celebrated on May 5th every year.
