A Green Shirt and Lots of Laughs at S4TL

June 20th, 2010

s4tl-1

It is time for Seminar for Tomorrows Leaders on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL!

S4TL is a week-long leadership training program for high school students. It is organized annually by several Rotary Districts in mid and southwest Florida. This award-winning program is capable of transforming the lives of these young leaders.

Our club is making an effort to participate this week in whatever ways we can. I had the pleasure of going to Lakeland today to assist with registration and check-in. My task of checking in the incoming delegates offered me the opportunity to meet many of tomorrows leaders face to face. I had a great time getting to know the students and other Rotarians and laughing away the afternoon. As I was leaving, I found myself wishing I was one of the lucky “white shirts” who get to stay and watch these teens blossom and grow all week. I highly recommend that our club members try to find a way to get to Florida Southern for a rap session during the week.

A special shout out to my fellow “green shirts” from the Seminole Lakes Club. Hope to see you soon at a St. Petersburg Sunset meeting!

What a great meeting! Certainly our biggest meeting to date, we had a blast tonight with the room so full we ran out of chairs! We had the GSE Team from Chile with us, several visiting Rotarians, a few guests, our wonderful speaker (Gail Stark from the Salvation Army) and all of our newest club members. Thank you so much to everyone for the amazing turnout!

Inspirational Statement ~ June 17

June 17th, 2010

This week’s inspiration was brought to the table by our Secretary, Carissa.

“I want you to remember that if you can dream it, you can probably make it come true. Build creative bridges to get where you’re going. Appreciate all the special qualities within you.

Don’t let worries get in the way of recognizing how great things can be. Always keep moving ahead. Live to the fullest and make each day count. Don’t let the important things go unsaid.

Don’t just have minutes in the day; have moments in time. Balance out any bad with the good you can provide. Know that you are capable of amazing results. Discover new strengths inside.”

They Call and We Come!

Please note: These are only a few of the project photos. More will be added this weekend, so please check back!

On June 12th our club had the opportunity to answer a call for help.
Rick, of Habitat for Humanity, called our club specifically for some urgent help he needed working on a house in south St. Pete. Through his own blood, sweat and tears, Rick and a small contingent of volunteers have been rebuilding a house literally from the ground up. This house is home to a retired school teacher and his wife that still volunteer their time tutoring in the local school system.

Getting near to the end of the project, Rick needed a boost of energy and volunteers to help get the job done. Our club stepped in and helped clean prime and paint the living room, bathroom, kitchen and kitchen cupboards, doors, and front porch. Thanks to all who volunteered on this project and answered this last minute call for help. It meant a lot to Rick to have our support and even more to the family who can now truly call this their home.

Inspirational Statement ~ June 10

June 10th, 2010

This week’s inspiration was brought to the table by our Membership Director, Daphne.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
— Mother Theresa

Inspirational Statement ~ June 3

June 4th, 2010

We have decided to start an archive of our inspirational statements from each week. This will allow people to refer back to the statements that hit home with them in particular, AND help members avoid repeating the inspiration that has come before.

Tami brought us a great quote last night from a Goddess named Oprah.

“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that is as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”
- Oprah Winfrey

What a Conference…

June 2nd, 2010

From the beginning to the end, the 2010 District 6950 “All Hands on Deck” Conference cruise was an incredible experience! I have so many highlights to share with you, that I think I could fill this whole webpage with stories and laughs… So instead, I would like to just share with you some photos and my top 5 favorite things about this year’s district conference. I hope every member of our Club is able to attend next year’s conference at the Tradewinds on St. Pete Beach. It is an incredible experience that is fun, exciting, and inspiring. I am so glad I had this opportunity…
Daphne

My top 5 highlights of the 2010 District 6950 Conference–

  1. The incredible people—I connected with Rotarians from all over our district and all over the world. I got to share in conversations and meals with old friends and new. I also received important wisdom and advice from new and long time Rotarians…
  2. Rotary Programs – During the conference there were presentations on Rotary’s important programs both on the international and local scale. The presentations covered Polio Pus and Shelter Box, etc. I have to admit that I had tears in my eyes several times during the conference…not from sadness, but from the hope that Rotary provides worldwide.
  3. Getting to know the Brazil & Chile Group Study Exchange Teams – Having been a GSE Team member 2 years ago, I truly enjoyed getting to know the two GSE teams from Brazil and Chile. Both teams have wonderful groups of people. With happiness I look forward to seeing the Chile team during their GSE experience in the next couple of weeks. With sadness I say good-bye to our Brazilian friends –but hope our paths cross again soon in life!
  4. Krystal & CJ’s engagement – what more can I say? At sunset on Saturday night, one of our club members, Krystal, got engaged to a fellow Rotarian, CJ. We were all able to celebrate together and it was truly a magical evening! Congratulations you two!
  5. Finally, and most importantly, I learned about the power of Rotary. I learned more about what it really means to be a Rotarian… From the people I spoke with, listened to, and connected with I have learned that the core of Rotary is sharing in love and friendship…
